We know Maroon 5 is headlining the Super Bowl 53 halftime show. We also know that Travis Scott and Big Boi will be joining him on stage. What we don’t know for sure is whether the artists will incoporate Spongebob Squarepants’ “Sweet Victory” song into the performance. If you’re wondering why that would even be a thing, let me catch you up. The creator of Spongebob Squarepants, Stephen Hillenburg, died in November, 2018. Not too long after a petition was started on Change.org that garnered a lot of attention. The title? Have “Sweet Victory” Performed at the Super Bowl. The petition has over 1.1 million signatures as of this writing. MORE: The best and worst Super Bowl halftime performances of all time”As some of you may or may not know, Stephen Hillenburg—the creator of Spongebob Sqaurepants—has passed away recently,” the petition page reads. “As a tribute to his legacy, his contributions to a generation of children, and to truly showcase the greatness of this song, we call for Sweet Victory to be performed at the Halftime Show.”Will Sweet Victory be played at the halftime show?Obviously the Change petition isn’t anything official, but it did generate enough attention that it seems like this might actually happen. The biggest clue we have is Maroon 5’s teaser for the performance, which included a brief appearance by the square-bottomed sponge.#SBLIII pic.twitter.com/dWKJQDS9ap— Maroon 5 (@maroon5) January 13, 2019Spongebob appears at 32 seconds inWe also have a tweet from Mercedes-Benz Stadium (where the game is being played) that teased a Spongebob appearance.pic.twitter.com/fWjOat9VPE— MercedesBenzStadium (@MBStadium) December 12, 2018There’s also a third piece of evidence, which involves Squidward’s voice actor, Rodger Bumpass. In a Facebook post screenshot (his account is private) he wrote, “To all Spongebob fans!!! Tune into the Super Bowl because Squidward gets to introduce the halftime entertainment!!!!”He also wrote down below in the comments, “It’s a very short piece but what the heck, it’s the Super Bowl!!!”There’s been no official statement from the people involved on whether this will actually happen, but we at least know Spongebob (or rather, Squidward) will be involved. The mystery is how or how much? Will there just be a Squidward voiceover or a Spongebob mascot in the background of the performance? Or will we actually get to listen to “Sweet Victory” like the petition asks for? We’ll have to wait to find out as it seems unlikely we’ll get any official word. Confirming this before it happens seems like it’d ruin the surprise. And just for fun, you can watch “Sweet Victory” again below.
